6 Best Bedroom Plants for a Relaxing and Rejuvenating Sleep

Published on November 30th 2019 by under Green Living Ideas,Plants

Did you know, we are one of the most sleep-deprived civilizations on the earth? Thanks to our mobiles, laptops, and uncontrolled stress reigning supreme in our lives. Studies show that plants in your bedroom can ease stress and lull you to sleep in a green way. Their air purifying properties and nice smell adds to their goodness. They are also a great decorating idea.

What Conditions in Your Bedroom Are Conducive For Plant Growth

Almost every plant needs sunlight and air to grow. So you should have at least one window in your bedroom. A dark bedroom is not suitable for keeping plants though there are varieties that can survive in low light conditions. Greenery in your bedroom cleans the air and helps in better sleep.

Bedroom Plants That Improve Your Sleep

1. Snake Plant

This low maintenance plant, also known as mother in law’s tongue, filters out harmful toxins from your bedroom. Since it breathes out oxygen even at night, it goes a long way in improving the air quality of your bedroom, aiding in sleep.

Basic Care Requirement: They grow best in indirect light though they can tolerate a variety of lighting conditions, including low light. You don’t need to water it often but should keep the plant in well-drained soil. Allow the soil to dry in between waterings.

2. Spider Plant

This plant makes it to this list due to its air-filtering properties that make way for restful sleep. The wax on its leaves helps trap mold, smoke and dust in the air. It prefers cooler temperatures (anything between 55- 65F) and looks great suspended from plant hangers. You can place it in a pot on a shelf, as well. If you follow Feng Shui principles, then this plant is considered to be okay when placed away from the bed.

Basic Care Requirement: It favors indirect, medium to bright light. You would need to water it only when the top 1-inch of the soil becomes dry. Evenly wet the soil, but don’t make it soggy or the roots may rot. Another indication of the plant needing water is the leaf tips turning brown. Use filtered water instead of tap water that may contain fluoride that harms the plant.

3. Lavender Plant

The aroma of this attractive plant is going to transport you to the world of dreams. Doze off to sleep, bidding adieu to anxiety with this plant on your nightstand. It also improves mood and helps you relax.

Basic Care Requirement: When grown as an indoor plant, lavender needs to be exposed to bright, direct sunlight for a few hours every day. If you have a south-facing window in your bedroom, you can put the plant on its sill. Water it when the soil is slightly dry and avoid overwatering, or the plant may rot.

4. Aloe Vera

This succulent, medicinal plant improves your sleep quality. It gives out oxygen at night for improved air quality, as well. It is great to have this plant in your house as the gel from its leaves can be used to treat sunburns, frostbites, itching, cold sores, dry skin and a multitude of other skin conditions.

Basic Care Requirement: It is a good idea to place the small plant in a West or South-facing window or a spot where it receives bright, indirect light. You need not worry much about watering the plant as it requires very little of it. Water it deeply only when the top two inches of the soil is dry. In winter, water it even less. Note that overwatering can kill the plant. Ensure that the soil is well-drained as the plant would rot in standing water.

5. Rubber Plant

The shiny leaves, together with the beefy shape of this plant, create a lot of lush interest in your bedroom. Its ability to remove toxins from the air and fight tropical diseases and parasites makes it a healthy option for your sleeping hole. Its round leaves bring good luck, abundance, and wealth to your home.

Basic Care Requirement: It favors moderate to bright indirect sunlight and constant moisture. So, water it regularly to keep the soil moist but don’t drown it. In winter, however, allow the top few inches of the soil to dry in between waterings. You need to clean its leaves gently with a damp cloth from time to time to maintain its air-purifying properties. If the leaves start drooping, the plant needs more water or light.

6. Dracaena

Basic Care Requirement: It needs bright indirect sunlight to grow. You need to allow the top soil to dry out completely before watering it again. The soil should not be kept soggy and should have good drainage.

Now that you are through with the list, you know that almost all the plants are easy to care for and bedroom friendly. We have chosen some of the best houseplants for your bedroom. Grow them well and earn kudos for your cool and green interior décor.
