DIY: How to make Homemade Fabric Softener

Published on April 8th 2015 by under DIY

It has been proven that the chemical content of the commercial fabric softeners available in the market are extremely harmful. Especially the ingredients like ‘quats’ (quaternary ammonium compounds), toxic compounds like phthalates, synthetic musks, etc. are dangerous! Prolonged use of these products might prove to be even fatal. These are not merely carcinogenic but are also hormone disruptors, or even assist in developing antibiotic resistance in the body.

How to make

Pour the essential oil in the salt and stir with a spoon until the salt absorbs it and spread evenly. Later, add the baking soda to this mixture and mix again thoroughly. This is your fabric softener crystal.

How to use

Add 2-3 tbsp of this mixture per load of your laundry only during your normal rinse cycle (and not during the washing process).

Tips

  1. If you don’t like the smell of vinegar, the crystal recipe (without vinegar) is ideal for you.
  2. You can use coarse sea salt as an epsom salt substitute.
  3. If you want a fresh smell of lemon, replace essential oil with 2tbsp of fresh lemon juice.

Tips

The above recipe is for one load laundry. You can proportionately increase the ingredients if you want to store it for future use. Do not use the essential oil if you would like it unscented.
